Inner flap of dust jacket:
William M. Ralston is a fortunate man.
Born in 1893, he grew up at a time when
cowboys still rode horses instead of
jeeps, and when cattle were as wild as
the vast prairies they roamed - not the
sleek and pastured bovines of today.
A cattleman from his earliest days,
Mr. Ralston was to witness the tremen-
dous changes that would take place in
his beloved Montana - changes which
would leave behind only the memory of
a harder - albeit fulfilling - way of life.
And we are fortunate because this per-
ceptive and warm-hearted man had drawn
upon his rich memory bank to set down
his impressions of a bygone era.
An instructive, entertaining and valu-
able book of life on the open range, THOSE
WERE THE DAYS is as much a paean to
the cowboy as it is an autobiography.
The author is steeped in the knowledge
of the West, of horse lore and riding,
branding and ranching.  Thus, he writes
authoritatively and sensitively of the
land, the people and the life he knew on
the range during the first three decades
of this century.
