Description

This is an
older Final copy script (not a vintage original script
, but a copy of a script) from the classic 1960's action/adventure comedy crime television series,
BATMAN
, co-starring Adam West and Burt Ward as the caped crusaders. It is from
Season 1, Episode 29
, which was entitled
The Bookworm Turns
, in which Commissioner Gordon (Neil Hamilton) appears to have been assassinated during the opening of a new bridge. A copy of Hemmingway's
For Whom The Bell Tolls
nearly blows-up the Batmobile. Both incidents are clues to the Bookworm's (Roddy McDowall) latest scheme. Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) interrogate The Bookworm's henchwoman, Lydia Limpet (Francine York), but deduce she is leading them into a trap. And while Batman intends to walk right into it, it is Robin who falls first.
Written by Rik Vollaerts and dated February 14, 1966,
this Final copy script consists of two parts (or acts) plus a closing TAG scene in a total of 67 pages which were 3-hole punched and bound with two brass brads with a tan cardstock back cover and no front cover. It is complete in overall very fine condition with three small creases on the bottom right corner of the outer title page with lesser creasing on the following 3 pages on the bottom right corner. There are no missing pages, tears, stains, or other flaws, nor are any handwritten notes present within.
The Bookworm Turns
featured the first of the many "head-out-the-window" cameo appearances that would become a hallmark on
Batman
(1966) during its first two seasons. A well-known celebrity would stick their head out the window as Batman and Robin were climbing up the side of a building and exchange a few lines of dialogue with them. In this first case, the cameo was Jerry Lewis. Other celebrities would include Art Linkletter, Sammy Davis Jr., syndicated newspaper columnist "Suzie Knickerbocker" (Aileen Mehle), Van Williams and Bruce Lee (as the Green Hornet and Kato), and, on Christmas week of 1966, Santa Claus (in the person of Andy Devine).
This is one of the few episodes where Alan Napier does not appear as Alfred the butler. Roddy McDowall would later perform the voice of the Mad Hatter several animated series including
Batman: The Animated Series
(1992),
The New Batman Adventures
(1997), and
Superman: The Animated Series
(1996). McDowell also read the novelization of
Batman
(1989) for the Audio Book version. McDowall, along with Anne Baxter ("Zelda the Great") are the only 2 actors to be arrested by both Batman and Lt. Columbo.
One of Bookworm's literary influenced clues referenced the Sherlock Holmes book,
A Study In Scarlet
. Sherlock Holmes has long been acknowledged as an inspiration for the Batman character.
